New Scout Uniform

New uniforms for the UK's half a million Scouts were revealed today (22/2/2001) on Founder's day, the 144th anniversary of Baden-Powell's birth. These will be introduced gradually over the next two years to become fully effective from January 2003. This is the first major change in almost 34 years.

Out goes the familiar mushroom brown and in comes turquoise, teal green, navy blue, beige and stone. Also in are a range of options from a very simple, low-cost sweatshirt with the traditional Scout scarf to multi-pocketed activity trousers, formal long sleeved shirts, fleeces and 'smart' trousers. For female members there is the option to wear a smart navy blue skirt.

Over 46,000 Members of the largest mixed youth organisation in the UK expressed their views during the largest and longest consultation process Scouting has conducted. Over 60% of the replies were from young people who wanted to make their opinions known. Generally speaking, there was wide acceptance of activity style uniform but a strong body of opinion from those who also wished to retain a smarter option for formal occasions. The most inspired debate was on the question of colour.

In order to launch the consultation, The Scout Association commissioned young Fashion Designer of the Year 1999, Meg Andrew to prepare initial sketches and to propose colour schemes likely to appeal to young people. These suggestions formed the basis of the consultation process and initiated the debate.

The basic elements of the new uniform range are:-

Beaver Scouts (6 -8 years) Turquoise sweatshirt + Group scarf
Cub Scouts (8 - 10½) Dark green sweatshirt + Group scarf
Scouts (10½ - 14) Teal green smart shirt + navy blue activity trousers + Group scarf
Explorer Scouts (14 - 18) Beige smart shirt + navy blue activity trousers + appropriate scarf.
Scout Network/Adult Leaders Stone smart shirt + personal choice of smart navy blue trousers, skirt or activity trousers + appropriate scarf

The aim has been to produce simple, stylish, and yet affordable garments across all the age groups. Within the range there are also various options for polo shirts, activity shorts, outer jackets, fleeces and a baseball cap. Local decisions will be made within the 9,500 Scout Groups in the UK as to exactly what options they will adopt to reflect local circumstances. Items will be branded using the new Scout logo discreetly incorporated into the various garments and accessories. Uniform for Sea Scouts and Air Scouts will remain substantially unchanged with blue as the predominant colour.

Scout Shops Ltd, the trading arm of The Scout Association, is now gearing up to be able to supply the new uniforms from the summer of 2001 so that young people changing Sections will be able to buy new uniform as they progress into the next age range. They will be available by mail order / e-commerce from Scout Shops Ltd and through its chain of 26 Outdoors Shops.

The decision to reassess Scout uniforms after 34 years came as part of a wide-ranging review covering everything from the activities that young people enjoy at their weekly meetings to age ranges and the image of Scouting. A new logo was introduced in January 2001 and delivery of the complete package of changes, including a new youth programme covering the age range 6 to 25 years, will be complete by 2003.
